Grillin time!

It is summertime.  It seems every recipe I see in a magazine, every cooking show on the Food Network I watch is all about grilling.  Well, that doesn't work out so well for someone like me who doesn't have a grill.  It is also super hot out and using the oven every night makes the entire apartment warm and miserable for a few hours.  So I decided, enough is enough, lets get a grill!   Shane and I had a grill but we left it in Tucson for his brother. When we got here, we bought a tiny charcoal grill that was like 3 inches tall , but it was stolen from our porch.  Classy, apartment neighbors, real classy. To be fair, we didn't even realize that it was gone for a few months so I guess we didn't miss it much.   Anyways, we headed down to Lowes and picked up a lovely new grill!  Unfortunately, it didn't fit in my car. So I had to leave Shane and the giant grill box in the parking lot, drive home, switch cars and pick him and the grill back up.  Yup, we are pretty smart ones.                                       Luckily it fit in his Jeep!

After a quick 45 mins of assembly- its grillin time!
I was pretty psyched! My first dish:  Pork Souvaki! It was delish!   This was a short- not super interesting post- more to come!!

Summertime....and the livin' is easy

Well, easier.  I just finished my first week of summer and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I am teaching summer school, which isn't super exciting, but its alright.   My kids are rough, but getting better each day, and the paperwork is way less so that is much much better!   I am also tutoring a sweet 2nd grader twice a week which is fun because she is cute and has lots of energy and zero attitude ( complete opposite of my 6th grade summer school crowd). My schedule is a bit heavier than what I envisioned my summer being, but it is working out alright.   I have decided to have fun anyways! On Tuesday ( our anniversary) we went to Ruggles- look at our crazy amount of food!

It was good stuff. Then on Wednesday after summer school and tutoring we got to go see Boone at HOME!!  Boone is our friend Melissa and Casey's little baby boy who has been in the NICU for over a month. I held him for the first time and was so happy to see him at home with his beautiful parents. I stole a picture from them to show how freaking cute he is. I really need an i phone- I think I would remember to take pictures at wonderful times like this.  Just one of the many excuses I am making to myself  to get over the hump of spending lots of money on cellphones every month.  Anyways...It was wonderful seeing the Belgards, baby Boone and saying goodbye to Amy and Jeff George- a missionary couple who we met a few months ago and really enjoyed hanging out with, but who left yesterday to return the mission field. Praying for you Georges!  We played settlers ( surprised?) and Jeff beat everyone- one handed.  Shane was a close second but I wasn't even close to winning. I was quite impressed with his ability to hold a fussy Boone, put him to sleep and beat all of us at Settlers.

Thursday we went to the Astros game! We bought 10 tickets for $20 bucks and were able to enjoy our first $2 game!   We took the metro down and I really enjoyed watching the city go by and walking through new parts of downtown as we go to the stadium. The game was fun- we got dominated in one of the innings we were there for, but enjoyed it anyways. Here are some pictures of downtown/baseball!
I just love baseball stadiums!

Of course we eat BBQ at a Texas baseball game!

One of the beautiful things about summer school is Fridays off!  It was amazing sleeping in today.  Shane was wonderful and woke up at 7 when Paisley woke up, and let me sleep.  I hung out, watched my new fun summer shows- The Mentalist, Franklin and Bash, and So You Think You Can Dance (also known as sytycd).   Paisley hung out with me but kept sleeping! She was super tolerant because I would pick her up, cuddle her, play with her and mess with her as long as she took it. She would then get annoyed, stand up and walk somewhere else to sleep. A few minutes later I would call her over and start all over again. I mean really though, how cute is she.

Then I got to go eat Thai food with my friend Jennifer Morton! It was lovely seeing my friend because it had been too long! We throughly enjoyed our ridiculous amount of Thai food and each others company.  Not sure what the rest of the weekend holds, but I'm excited for the potential of movies, more baseball,  dog parks(?), house hunting, possibly a super belated date with the gym and more! I hope everyone else is having a lovely summertime too!

Till death do us part....

It was Shane and my 3rd Anniversary on Tuesday! Its hard to believe it has been three years.   We enjoyed an easy night together- went to Ruggles Grill for dinner ( sooo yummy!), came home, spent time together, and started planning our July vacation! I think we are going to Austin in July as a late anniversary/summertime escape! It should be fun stuff.  We also watched a video of our ceremony. It was really refreshing and sweet to watch a video of us saying our vows to one another.   It has been a wonderful 3 years and we look forward to so many more!  Thats all I got- so here are some pretty pictures:)

Bowling, Breweries, and Board Games

The Kraffts came into town for Memorial Day and we had a delightful time.  Did you know that in the five years Shane and  I have been together, we have never been bowling .  I guess I have only been bowling once in the last five years and it was in Africa of all places.   I tried to find pictures of our Port Elizabeth bowling adventure, but of the millions of pictures from that year that I have on my computer, there were very few of us bowling. Who would have thought that bowling  wouldn't be a priority for our picture talking while living and serving in Africa for 9 months.

So I was pretty excited about experiencing a new "first" with Shane.  Three years into marriage and it seems the only firsts left include huge life changing decisions( and diapers).  We went to this fancy ( though a bit expensive) bowling alley and had so much fun! I wasn't as terrible as I thought  I would be although the entire first game I could only knock down pins one one of my turns.  Most of the time I would miss completely the first turn and then get them all the second, which really made my spares pretty useless, but I came close to 100 on the second game so I was happy. I still was in last place, but I will take last place with a score of 95 than my first score of 60 something. Its amazing how enjoyable it is to knock things down!

We also ate a lot which is always fun, and went to the museums, played Settlers and hung out together.  We have defintiely become addicted to Settler of Catan. Its a board game that is a cross between Monopoly and Risk. We played it once or twice with the Sams' in Tucson and really liked it. Then we met the Belgards.  It seems that they have a strong.... passion for Settlers ( playing 2-3 times a week) and have passed that obsession... I mean passion onto us:) We ended buying it because we wanted to share it with Shane's family.  We had a delightful time which proves how awesome of a game it is- everyone enjoys it!
Cupcakes and Settlers- perfect:)
Oh! We also went to the St. Arnold's Brewery! We had never been but was told it was really cool. It was! It was nothing like what we expected.  I thought we would stand in a line, walk around a brewery and get tiny samples of some beer.  But when we arrived we walked into a huge room, filled with large wooden picnic tables, and hundreds of people.  People were on the floor, in their own lounge chairs, and sitting at the tables, eating and playing all sorts of games. We each got a glass( not plastic cup, but glass) and were allowed 4 refills of whatever beer we would like. We weren't prepared to hang out for the long haul, so we each only had two of our allowed four, but there were some serious breweryers there who inspired us.  Next time we are going in prepared- with friends, chairs, board games, snacks and lots of time to hang out and enjoy. We did get a quick tour and learned some things about beer, which was enjoyable as well.

I am still amazed at how much there is to do in Houston.  I love living in a city where there are always new adventures to discover.  Shane and I are going to do our best to continue discovering this summer.  When we can't go on vacation, we will bring the vacation to us!

Bulletproof and Bicycles

Shane and I were driving home from the Galleria last night when we heard the song Bulletproof.   I started laughing and asked him what this song made him think of- immediately he started laughing too and said bike riding in Tucson last summer.  One of my favorite Tucson memories came at the end of our time there.  Here is how it went down.

Shane and I were wanting to hang out with people on a random Tuesday night so we called up little Adam.  He said he was bike riding and invited us to come.  We didn't have bikes at the time, but he assured us he could get us some and we should meet him at our friend Drew's house and go bike riding with him.  So we  showed up at Drew's house a  few minutes later. Of course, Adam wasn't there, Drew didn't know we were coming, and he was hosting a dinner party of sorts.  We felt pretty awesome crashing his dinner party, but luckily Drew was cool with it.  Adam shows up a bit later and tells us that Chris scored us a Tandem bike to ride tonight.  I hadn't ridden any sort of bike in a really long time and was pretty nervous about riding a bike, especially a tandem bike, but Shane assured me we would be ok.  We headed over to BICAS ( a cool bike shop that reminds me why I love Tucson) to rent our teal colored tandem bike, LoLa.  After a few rocky starts( but no spills!) Shane and I found our groove and headed towards the U of A campus where we were greeted with hundreds of people ready for a bike ride.  At this point the quick ride with little Adam I had in my head, was no where to be seen.

After a few minutes we took off in a massive group towards downtown.  Here are the positives and negatives about tandem bike riding:

Positives
* If you are in back you don't have to look where you are going because you have no control! I saw parts of Tucson I had never seen before, and probably wouldn't have been able to see if I had to look where I was going.
* You can talk on the phone! I tried that once a long time ago while bike riding and failed. This came in handy when we got separated from Adam, Michael or Chris.
* When you are on the only Tandem bike of hundreds of bikes- people think you are cool, or ridiculous I guess. Either way they say hi and shout " go tandem!"
* It is a wonderful marriage exercise-  I had to completely trust Shane wouldn't run me into a tree or something, and we had to communicate well in order to move and not fall down.

Negatives:
*Balancing yourself on a bike- easy. Balancing two separate people on one bike- difficult
*  Everyone has their own rhythm when biking.  You don't really think about when to stop peddling and coast, you just do it. Well most of the time the two people on the bike don't randomly stop at the same time, causing problems.
*You have no control in back.  Its really frightening sometimes, but again good for practicing trust.
Super thirsty on a hot Tucson night.

Obviously, the positives outscore the negatives.  We loved it!  The people who were riding we so friendly and  kind. We instantly became part of some living organism- an ever growing and moving community. It was really neat. We did it a few different times, exploring parts of Tucson I had never seen, but loved.   We said we would find something like that here in Houston, but of course got busy with life and haven't.  Having those fun memories come back to mind has inspired me to find something similar here.  Its great exercise and a great way to explore a new ( or not so new) place.
Michel is obviously the professional here- ready to go!

Oh! I forgot where this all started- some people had stereos attached to their bikes and played music.  I think it was the last ride we went on, there was a girl with a stereo on her bike and all it played was Bulletproof.  I swear, she must have had that song on loop because everytime we got near her, it was " This time baby I'll beeeeee, Bul-letproof!" over and over and over. At first it was really funny, then really annoying, then really funny again- you know how it goes.  Now I am filled with sweet memories of friends and bike riding whenever I hear that song.
